Coronation Street Catch Up: the flipping loon edition

your irreverent update on what happened last week on Canada's Coronation Street...

What is it about the Platts and the Weatherfield Canal?

Some years ago, Richard Hillman tried to kill Gail and the Platt family by driving his car into the murky brine.

A few years later, David replicated the stunt by driving his car into the Weatherfield waterway in order to ruin Sarah's wedding day (mission accomplished).

And now, David decides that the best course of action (after Jodie got shot while tussling with Shona) is to toss the firearm into the Canal.

But why the coverup?

All this happened after Bethany finally spilled the truth about Jodie's concerted efforts to destroy Shona's life and marriage by portraying her as unhinged and crazy. Jodie achieved this primarily by playing a recording of Harper crying (on multiple occasions) that effectively freaked out Shona.

However, once the truth was revealed about Jodie's evil campaign, there was a showdown at the Platt house. All was revealed. David even found Jodie's box of stolen items with Lisa's police ID (but where's Brian's book?)

Jodie, now exposed as the evil sister with malicious intent, is cornered and brandishes a gun (that she nabbed while Carl was delivering the weapon to Fiona). David and Shona believe the gun is fake. Shona tries to wrestle it away from Jodie and Jodie is shot.

Rather than explain the situation to Detective Swain, David and Shona decide to lie. David tosses the gun into the canal and they insist that Jodie was shot by a random passerby.

But don't worry about Jodie. She's fine. She recovers from the gunshot wound in record time and discharges herself from hospital. Where is she? We don't know. Will she tell the truth about what happened? We don't know. Will Swain realize that David and Shona are lying? Maybe.

Meanwhile Kit is struggling after his diagnosis of breast cancer. Treatment is starting and Kit is fortunate to be supported by Bernie and Brody. But he can't keep his condition secret for long and soon the punters at the Rovers know. Kit finally tells his boss (Swain). Todd takes it upon himself to spill the beans to Sarah. Sarah, by the way, wanted Kit to testify (as a character witness) at her upcoming trial but Kit has declined.

Oh, and one more twist to the saga.

Bethany has discovered she's pregnant. I would hold off on planning the baby shower as the news probably won't be warmly received as one suspects that Kit is the Dad. Awkward!

Speaking of awkward, Nick tries to help out Leanne at Speed Dal by providing some badly needed meat. However, following reports of food poisoning, the meat is found to be expired (no-one checked the label apparently). The reviews are in (and they're not good). Tracy is livid (and sick). Ken avoided the illness by being a vegetarian. Yelp is damning Speed Dal with opprobrium.

Idris is cheesed off with Nick and blames him for the disaster. Idris' response? Writing fake reviews about the Bistro. Business drops off rapidly as Yelp opprobrium strikes again. Idris then explains his strategy to Leanne. He wants to see the Bistro fail so he can swoop in and buy the restaurant for a pittance. Interesting business plan but how are you going to bring customers back if the reviews suck?

Over at Gary and Maria's place, Jake is angry because of Gary's impending court appearance and he believes that his Dad may go to prison. Jake thinks Gary is destroying the family and he decides to move in with Izzy (his Mom).

And, over at Debbie's eclectic and colourful flat, Ronnie admits to himself (and Carl) that he is struggling as Debbie's caregiver. Ronnie inadvertently leaves a brochure about a nursing home in the flat which, of course, Debbie finds. This will not be good.

And now for a few lines from the week that was:

Jodie to David:
"I used to think I was a lone wolf"
(She's half right... about the wolf part)

David to Shona re: Jodie:
"She tried to seduce me - twice!"
(in that case, Jodie must really be nuts)

David to Bethany:
"This happened because Jodie's a flipping loon"
(please, let's be sensitive and say Jodie 'struggled with complex issues of abandonment')

David to Shona re: Jodie:
"She's a fruit loop"
(that's an offensive term, especially to cereal lovers)

David searches for the right word to describe Jodie:
"Psychopath? Sociopath? Personality disorder?"
(you had me at "psychopath")

Toyah says there's one upside to the expired meat fiasco:
"The thought of Tracy Barlow doubled up in the toilet"
(kinda makes one nauseous at the thought)

***
Well, fellow Shona Supporters, so ends another week. Finally the truth comes out about Jodie's campaign of evil against Shona and her family. Poor Lily has suffered from false accusations and the family was almost torn asunder. Now that Jodie is on the lam, goodness knows what will happen.

And, of course, we have yet another surprise pregnancy to report as Bethany seems to be with child (Dev's store must do boffo business just from selling pregnancy test kits). Well, that's more than enough blather from me. Thanks for dropping by and have a great week.
