Do you remember when the high drama of Christmas on Coronation Street was whether or not Rita would sing at the Rovers? Ah, those were the days.
This Christmas the high drama was gun violence. Specifically, Derek finds a gun in Gary's tat shop and goes on a rampage. The result is gruesome. Robert (on his way to see Vicky's newborn baby), is shot and killed. Shona, hiding in the Winter Wonderland, is shot and seriously injured. She's now at Weatherfield General and unable to breathe without a respirator. On top of his woes, David learns that he has to testify at the trial of Josh.
Michelle is overcome with grief at the news of Robert. But the shock continues as she hands over the keys to the Bistro to the new mystery owner who turns out to be Ray Crosby, perv proprietor. She leaves the Street for Ireland, leaving her two feuding sons. Ryan quits his job at the Bistro and Ali is determined to take down Gary and so goes to the police to tell the cops about Gary's loansharking activities.
Meanwhile Derek's wife comes to the site of the shooting and provides Izzy with enough info to convince her that Gary is up to no good.
The police are on the case and bring Gary in for questioning. He's released (thanks Paula) but the net is closing on him and, under pressure, he finally confesses (almost) everything to Maria who is shocked. Despite pressure from Gary to stay quiet, Fiz confesses to Ty and Jade the fact that she brought the gun (for sale as an antique) to Gary's tat shop.
Amy is now doing a work placement with Paula. Tim is still trying to get Sally to forgive him for being an unintentional bigamist. Abi seems to be attracted to Kevin.
Ray immediately causes trouble by stealing a marketing idea from Jenny and Johnny (i.e. free booze for the punters).
And now for a few lines from the week that was:
Detective to Gary:
"You're a loan shark aren't you?"
(he lends money at exorbitant rates; he could be a bank)
Izzy to Gary:
"You're a violent, lying lowlife"
Izzy to Gary:
"You're a violent, lying lowlife"
(oh, and Jake says 'hi')
Tracy to Amy:
"It's been a terrible year"
Tracy to Amy:
"It's been a terrible year"
(probably due to Steve's bionic sperm)
Michelle to Ryan re: Ray:
Michelle to Ryan re: Ray:
"He's handsy"
(as opposed to Fonzie)
Evelyn to Ty re: Cerberus:
"My dog did not lick your turkey"
Evelyn to Ty re: Cerberus:
"My dog did not lick your turkey"
(he thought it was a buffet)
Audrey speculates on female weasel stereotypes:
"Maybe she does all the work and the man weasel gets the credit"

"Maybe she does all the work and the man weasel gets the credit"
(and only half the pay... if weasels get paid)

Well, festive folks, so ends Christmas week on Coronation Street and, frankly, I'm a little bummed out. There was very little Christmas cheer this year and lots of violence and conflict. Plus Michelle left. I'm not too crazy about that Ray guy either. Thank heaven for Evelyn (and Cerberus). Oh well, let's see what the New Year brings. All the best and thanks for stopping by. have a great week.
