Coronation Street Catch Up: the annual opening of the wallet edition

your one stop update on what happened last week on Canada's Coronation Street...

You can open your eyes now; the Platt-Barlow Christmas dinner debacle is over.

For those who endured the Nativity Nightmare, it was quite the Christmas Cringe-a-thon. There was Audrey (half corked), Gail (more Gailish than usual - say no more), Steve (Amy & Tracy stayed well away), Peter (nice jumper), Carla (seeking a quick escape), Ken (armed with Hell's Bells), David (the churlish chef), Shona (innocent bystander), Sarah (the sadistic architect behind the travesty) and latecomer Adam (just in time for just desserts).

And we didn't even get to hear Ken's hand bells (is it just me or does that sound slightly X-rated?)

Meanwhile there was plenty of Christmas un-cheer elsewhere on the Street.

Fiz cancels her trip to Scotland with the kids and Phill and surprises Ty with a return home for Christmas (quick, cancel the fishcakes!) All goes swimmingly until Phill and Ty fall out and have a mano-a-mano (um... maybe childo-a-childo) fight out on the Street.

In the spirit of anti-Christmas, Max decides to sabotage Daniel's Christmas caroling event by changing the words to a classic song and causing extreme embarrassment - before learning that it was Daniel who prevented him from being expelled. That's gratitude for you. Never mind, the day ends with Rev. Billy (in a place he should be) playing Christmas tunes on the piano to the delight of everyone singing along.

Daisy, despite fab gift bags and exclusive parties, tires of her famous footballer boyfriend and tries to get back with Daniel, only to find that he's having an aerobic snog with Lydia in the Christmas market.

Abi is thrilled by a surprise Christmas visit from the twins but the lustre soon fades when she sees Kelly on the Street and seems determined to focus her energy on making Kelly's life miserable. So far, mission accomplished.

The big news? The big lug is back. I guess anoraks just don't suit the Peruvian climate. Yes, Roy Cropper returns much to the delight of Nina who is experiencing severe anxiety as a result of her ordeal at the hands of Corey and his gang.

More news. Sam is talking but only with a walkie-talkie. Still... baby steps.

The bad news? George (sometimes not the sharpest knife in the drawer) takes Gail's advice and presents Eileen with a bespoke funeral as a Christmas gift. Eileen is not amused.

And now for a few lines from the week that was:

Nina to Roy after he returns from Peru:
"What do you call an uncle that leaves his niece alone at Christmas?"
(Roy?)

Ken pleads with Audrey and Gail for a musical interlude:
"Could we just play something festive on the hand bell?
(not sure that's physically possible)

Nina comments on Roy's wisdom:
"It's like living with the Dalai Lama"
(is that the guy who owns the caf on Rosamund Street?)

Eileen complains to Todd about her gift from George:
"What woman from what planet would love a funeral for Christmas?"
(maybe a morbid lady from Mars?)

Max changes the lyrics to a Christmas Carol sung by Daniel's student choir:
"Once in Royal David's City lived a creepy teacher man"
(I don't recall that part of the nativity story)

Peter explains why Max sabotaged the Christmas Carol lyrics:
"Because he's a feral little thug, that's why"
(makes sense)

Adam qualifies Sarah's over-zealous pregnancy announcement:
"Let's just say it's a work in progress"
(too much information)

Abi explains to Debbie the reason for the family Bistro meal:
"Kev's doing his annual opening of the wallet"
(better get a crowbar)

Daisy to Jenny about her fave freebie offered at an exclusive party:
"I love body butter"
(unsalted, one presumes)

***
Well, festive fans, so ends another week. So nice to see Roy back. Too bad that Abi's happy Christmas has turned to yet another sour mood. And, what of Curtis? Will he return to marry Emma or have we seen the last of him? I guess we'll find out. Thanks for stopping by on a cold weekend. Stay warm, stay safe and have a great week!
