The past weeks have been unrelentingly sad on Coronation Street so it's easy to forget Hayley and Roy Cropper in happier times. Hayley was introduced to Roy by accident through Alma (Mike Baldwin's wife) who had a rather awkward dinner party in the hopes of matching Hayley with Curly Watts (while a very drunk - and much younger - Audrey looked on and made inappropriate remarks).
Curly left the dinner abruptly but Hayley and Roy had an instant rapport. Hayley's first immortal words to Roy over dinner were: "Have you always lived in Weatherfield, Roy?"
That was back in 1998 and the rest, as they say, is history. If you'd like to take a trip down memory lane to that first meeting, have a look at the episode here.
Then, of course, there was Roy and Hayley's first date and the official start of a wonderful relationship. You can see their first date (as well as a younger Gail shouting the odds and behaving badly - some things don't change) in this episode right here.
It's hard to believe that all this started 16 years ago when Hayley and Roy were just beginning their romance, when the best was yet to come and everything seemed possible.
I'll miss you, Hayley Cropper.
