Coronation Street TGIF: the Dirty Widows edition

please note this post makes reference to the October 10 episode on CBC

Here's the bottom line on last week: Tim can't read, Sally can't speak (well, one out of two isn't bad -ed), Kylie can't resist the temptation to be bad, Mary can't stop interfering in Dev's love life, Julie can't stop pining for 'The Dev', Yasmeen can't stop banging on about her community centre project, Liz can't resist a tarty hairdo (who can? -ed).

But the big news is the new character on the Street: Loopy Lulu Callum.  Kylie's old beau is back and reminiscing with Kylie at the Dog and Gun (I hear they do a lovely Sunday brunch - ed). Ah the good ol' days: getting bladdered, stealing a bus, getting bladdered, licking a drip tray, getting bladdered... well, you get the idea.

How about a few lines from the week that was:

Tim provides an update on Sally's laryngitis
"She still sounds like Toad of Toad Hole"
(how about making her a nice Toad in the Hall for dinner?)

Dev reads the shopping list which Sally wrote for Tim:
"Love you Mr. Sweet Lips"
(his friends just call him 'Lips')

Julie is entranced by Dev's exotic tales of the subcontinent:
"Sometimes I think I could have been an Indian"
(oh great, that makes 1.252 billion... and one)

Mary informs Dev about Julie's true intentions:
"She just wants to get her hands on your dhoti"
(If by dhoti, you mean a rectangular piece of unstitched cloth, usually around 4.5 metres (15 ft) long, wrapped around the waist, I think you're wrong)

Julie introduces Dev's kids to her puppet:
"Say 'hello' to Loopy Lulu"
(Ms. Lulu, Weatherfield police want to know where you were at the time that Tina McIntyre was murdered)

Kylie bemoans her reputation to Eva:
"Why does everyone think the worst of me?"
(Oh I dunno, pole dancing, drugs, selling your kid, sleeping with your husband's brother.. shall I continue)

Norris is shocked by Tim's window cleaning flyer:
"Do you know what I've just had shoved through my letterbox?"

Sharif is not keen on Yasmeen's charitable endeavours:
"Why do we have to feed the poor and needy?"
(Are there no workhouses?)

Maddy to Norris re: Tim and his x-rated flyers:
"Does he look like a pimp?"
(Pimp? No. Chump? Maybe)

Sally gets a call on Tim's mobile from someone looking for 'Dirty Widows':
"Don't ring this number again, you sex fiend"
(oh and by the way, do your windows need cleaning?).

I must say Maddy is growing on me. whereas Yasmeen is growing tiresome. And Callum? Well, it's too early to tell. I'll have to watch a bit more of the Dog and Gun (The pub or a canine and a firearm? - ed). Have a happy Canadian Thanksgiving and thanks for stopping by. Cheers!

  1. Thanks for your always amusing and accurate perspective on the show. It makes the dreary episodes more palatable. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

    1. Thanks very much for the nice comments and I hope you had a happy Thanksgiving as well. All the best.
