Coronation Street's Odd Couple: Robert Preston & Tracy Barlow

What's the deal with Tracy Barlow and Robert Preston?

It's like Harry Potter dating Voldemort's daughter (the one who went to jail for murder and then set fire to an appartment causing the deaths of two fictional - but loved - characters).

There's no earthly reason why ol' Bob would be attracted to Tracy the Terrible. Yes, he was once married to her (but so what?)  Frankly, Robert was better off with his most recent ex-wife (you know, the one that can't act).  Of course, some men are inexplicably attracted to the proverbial bad female. But let's face it, Tracy is no Lindsay Lohan (more like a Lindsay Lowlife).

What do they have in common anyway? Robert's an accomplished chef. Tracy runs a poxy tat shop. Robert has human feelings. Tracy does not. Robert seems nice. Tracy seems evil. Need I go on?  It's only a matter of time before Bobby gets wise to Tracy's considerable shortcomings.  My only question is: why has it taken so long?

  1. I think Robert had a fantasy of Tracy playing in his head ever since she left him. He's now discovering that it was only a fantasy and not connected to the reality of the nasty woman he sees in front of him.
It reminds me of a great line from the movie adaptation of Steinbeck's "Cannery Row".
"I like you fine, Doc, when you're not around."

  2. Thanks for the thoughtful comment. It's certainly true that Robert reconnected with Tracy after Deirdre died so Tracy appeared more vulnerable (and certainly nicer) than usual. Maybe that fulled Robert's fantasy? Thanks also for the great line from Steinbeck. All the best.
